Big Shadows are enemies only found in the deep sections of the complex, acting as the larger variant of the Shadows found in the complex. They behave very similarly (apart from being invisible) to the Giant. They made their debut in Rundown 002 E1.
Appearance[ | ]
The Big Shadow's appearance is similar to a Giant. However, like other Shadows, they are mostly translucent, being almost impossible to see without a flashlight. Even with a flashlight, they are quite difficult to see. They make similar noises to regular Giants, unlike regular Shadows who are much higher pitched.
Spawning[ | ]
Big Shadows are rare, simply because they only spawn in certain expeditions and in specific rooms. However, in these rooms they might spawn in high numbers, which can make them very troublesome. Usually they spawn in pairs and mostly in a sleeping state. However, they can wake up if they are in the room connected by a bloody door.
Behavior[ | ]
Since they spawn in the sleeping state, their behavior is the same as any other sleeping enemy. However, a large difference is the fact that they are very hard to see, which is a problem as using a flashlight to see them will cause them to enter the second stage of awareness very quickly.
Unlike Giants, Big Shadows are often found in unusual poses. While dormant, some will be crouched down, while others will stand with their arms up and their head listing to one side. These poses carry over into their alerted state which can make Big Shadows deceptively deadly, as, dependent on their pose, they may be closer or further than a mark by the Bio Tracker would normally indicate.
They can be killed silently while in the sleeping state, in the same method as a Giant. However, this is dangerous because if they are not killed they will be able to inflict very high damage to players nearby. There could also be trouble seeing whether they have actually died or are simply staggered.
When alerted, their behavior is a combination of both the Giant's and the Charger's, having a very long-range tongue attack. However, they will usually use their other attack of charging players and using their punch attack (which is very dangerous as it deals 40% damage). This means that even the healthiest player can be quickly downed by them. The Bio Tracker is extremely valuable when fighting them as without tracking abilities they are hard to spot before they will have already downed you. Despite them being shadow enemies they will still be marked for one minute if marked by the Bio Tracker.
Trivia[ | ]
- While the Big Shadow's tongue cooldown is always 3 seconds, the timing between attacks is highly stance dependent. The crouching stance Big Shadow has both a longer attack wind-up and generally spends a longer time strafing in between attacks (due to its longer strafe animations), resulting in a noticeably longer time between attacks than the other stance variants.
